STORY
STORY
Francisco creates each piece using techniques passed down through generations—but he adds his own signature to the craft.
Blending innovation with tradition, he incorporates rare, natural elements that he cultivates himself. Organic copal sap and hand-harvested tobacco leaves give his pottery its signature smoky black hue, while other colors—ranging from soft cream to vibrant orange and aqua—are achieved using minerals sourced from a nearby mine.
This is the magic of Oaxaca: a region where each artisan draws from their own unique source of earth, sand, and elemental materials to shape a distinct identity in every piece.
Francisco has refined his practice into an art form—creating timeless, handcrafted clay objects that honor ancestral wisdom while embracing the spirit of innovation.

OAXACA, MEXICO
Francisco Martínez
Francisco’s connection to Oaxacan pottery began in his childhood in Santa María Atzompa, a town known for its green-glazed ceramics.
After a decade in the U.S., he returned to his roots, reviving the traditional techniques passed down through generations.
Working from his open-air studio, Francisco blends ancestral methods with innovation—infusing his clay with organic copal and tobacco grown on his land. Fired in hand-built kilns using natural materials, his pieces range in color from smoky black to earthy creams and greens. Each one reflects the soul of Oaxaca: crafted by hand, rich in heritage, and deeply connected to the land.
